Originally Sufetula, the city started pre-first century but grew  during the second half of the first century to the city, whose ruins we visited. It was first a pagan Roman site dedicated to their gods but later became a “hotbed’ of Christianity in the fourth century under the reign of Constantine (306-337) and Byzantium. It probably served as a city until at least the twelfth century . When  we visited it was cloudy very windy and exceptionally cold and none of us was dressed for it. There are far more wonderful sights to see in these ruins than I have pictures for.
